This month's featured poet is one that we lost, during the final few days of this oh-so-brutal year of 2016. His poem "Personification" is our featured video this month (click the link below). But rather than write up a bio on him, perhaps the most eloquent remembrance of the poet and his work comes from his friends and Southern Fried Poetry, who posted this:
"To the family and friends of Southern Fried Poetry:
As you may have heard by now, the Southern Fried Poetry community lost a very important member in the early morning of December 27th. For many poets, Tavis Brunson represented the spirit of Southern Fried as an exceptional performer, writer, competitor and spoken word emissary.
While Tavis “Da Minista” Brunson was a former Southern Fried Poetry Slam champion, his greatest legacy will be the friendships he fostered in his years of service. He will be remembered as a kind and giving person who never missed an opportunity to make people laugh, cry or just simply think.
Though this loss is devastating to those who knew him, Tavis’ ability to bring groups of people together from all walks of life demonstrates that his lasting contribution to our community will be the compassion and love we have formed for one another.
According to the family, cards and sentiments of love (and food) can be sent to: 402 Regency Park Dr, Columbia, SC 29210.
It is a tradition at Southern Fried to give toasts to those who have emboldened our lives with poetry and laughter, so we would like to end by raising a glass to the Prince of Petty and Protector of Gotham. Tavis, we cannot thank you enough for all you have given to us.
Rest Well Batman.
Sincerely,
The Advisory Council
